Otherwise, as a merciless, funny microcosm of bourgeois values, the play would appear to be the engulfing tide that its author saw way back in 1911. The cynical work caused a scandal and was immediately banned. Sternheim, who was to rise to eminence as his country's only modern comedy playwright, also wrote in the tradition of Moliere, adding a clipped, curlicued language style developed by the later Expressionists.
