I just recently came across this copy of Gary Cooper spanking Claudette Colbert. What is funny is that I found it on a vanilla forum which had a thread on pictures of Claudette Colbert.

Funny peculiar, or funny ha-ha?

There is nothing unusual in seeing a photo of a mainstream spanking scene on a mainstream forum. You and I, and all of us here, we are spankos; so these pictures send our blood racing to the moon. But to the average vanilla couple, if it's mainstream, it's okay.

One way to gauge this is by playing the commercial DVD of "Kiss Me Kate" (MGM, 1953). If you'll notice, the spanking scene is plainly displayed on the cover. Add to that, the fact that every time you punch the "Menu" button to change your settings, that same spanking pic goes up on your screen. To us, that's funny and titillating. To the average person, it's just another movie scene.

Cheers,
Dan

Thank you Dan. What I was actually using was an English metaphor probably not translatable in American. Funny, in this instance, is that I stumbled across this picture while looking for something else. "What is funny" is a commonly used coin of phrase in England and it isn't meant to be taken in the literal sense.

P.S. I realise that phrases don't come in denominations of coins either grinning smiley

I sort of reviewed Bluebeard's Eighth Wife, in this review I show the movie video of the spanking, the source image that Richard Windsor shows above and Also wrote a short spanking story about what I'd like to have seen happen in the spanking scene that didn't because of the Hayes Office putting restrictions on the producers. ...

What is the 'source' image, Paul? On my recent post on my blog I made mention that you had recently posted about it as well, but due to having found a brand new pic I reluctantly posted about it as well. That will be a topic in an upcoming blog post of mine "Blogging etiquette" winking smiley This was the pic that I thought you had posted, albeit a different copy of the same pic.

This pic was also taken from the same thread as the one above.

How different the scene looks when you include all those lights and stuff. Makes one realize the artifice involved.

No doubt the director called for several retakes to get the severity and the reactions just right.

I mean, wouldn't you, if you were directing something like this?

I think I posted this before on SFR, but it's worth a re-post on this thread.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - Nov 25, 1937

Arrived on the set where Claudette Colbert and Gary Cooper are co-starring in 'Bluebeard's Eighth Wife' just in time to witness a torrid argument. Gary was refusing to play a scene in which he was to turn Claudette over his knee and give her a sound spanking. The director and Claudette were trying to break down his general impulses. Suddenly Claudette resorted to gestures. Smack! With a quick flip of her hand, she slapped Gary a resounding blow. "Now," said she, "turn about is fair play. Maybe Gary will agree to give me that spanking." Gary, half laughing, half mad, gave her a sweeping bow. "Madame," he said, "I withdraw all my objections - it will be a great pleasure!".

Somewhere once I read an interview with Collette in which it was clear that she was not adverse to receiving a good spanking from a handsome gentleman.

I don't know how many of you have actually seen the film Bluebeards' Eighth Wife (1938), but those who did may remember being disappointed by the spanking scene.

Gary Cooper does, actually, turn Claudette Colbert over his knee and raise his arm to spank. But the final print, as released, does not show a single swat landing on the target. It's all off screen.

HOWEVER... if you chance to see this film listed on your TV guide for TCM or any other such channel, try to watch the promos for it BEFORE it airs. In the "Preview of Coming Attractions," we can see two (2) actual swats make their way to Claudette's bottom. Why they were excised from the finished production, I have no idea. Maybe Lubitsch was trying to "tone down" the idea that a beautiful woman was being spanked by her husband?

Cheers,
Dan

Dan, I doubt whether Lubitsch, a sexually sophisticated Berliner, would have been at all bothered by the idea of a marital spanking - quite the contrary. Any toning-down would probably have been suggested by the studio front office, always nervous about offending the prudish dictates of the Hays Code.
