Gervaise

In the 1956 movie "Gervaise" - which was nominated for an Oscar - two laundresses battle it out in public - with paddles used for their work.
The winner (famous German actress Maria Schell) gets to spank the loser (Suzy Delair) on the bare (but off-screen). BostonBob claims the woman spanked was Rita Cadillac, a body double for Suzy Delair, so I believe him :-).

I have seen a longer version of the spanking somewhere. It is interesting that a film with anuy nudity at all got an oscar in 1956.

Perhaps there is an original version for European consumption somewhere.

Suzy Delair wasnotorious for getting spanked in movies. :-)

It looks like a cinematic version of Emile Zola's novel "L'Assomoir".

You're correct, it's an adaptation of "LAssommoir"; the paddling is far longer and more severe in the book, and figures significantly in the plot and is referenced several times subsequently. Rita Cadillac was a dancer at the Crazy Horse Saloon, known for its beautiful and bizarrely named performers.
